This is another very interesting picture taken in 1959 just prior to the merger of infantry regiments. Sgt Eric Herrington as he was then was picked to go to Wellington Barracks and represent The Somerset Light Infantry, he can be clearly seen on the enlargement on the right, WHY - because of his sash, look closely. Eric tells me he was challenged about his sash and he had to enlighten the organisers of the SomLI history and was prepared to stick it out at all odds under pressure.

Private Pike with his boxing trophies, pictured at Agra, India

The other side of the postcard there is written in pencil - Pte Pike S. L. Infantry Winner of all India Boxing Welter Weight. Agra, India 1925.

This old postcard was sent in by June Clark and will now be donated on her behalf to The Somerset Light Infantry Archive at Taunton. It was among some photographs belonging to her grandfather Arthur (Joe) Cook who died in 1990.

Sergeant in The Somerset Light Infantry

The uniform is an early 20th century full dress uniform. The
jacket is scarlet with royal blue collar and cuffs and white
piping. The collar badges are brass, 1881-1902 pattern as are the GS
buttons. The badges of rank etc are gold. The trousers are royal blue
with a red stripe.

The medals he is wearing are we think Indian General Service, and an Army Long Service.

My father was in the SLI during WW1 and was captured in 1918 at St. Quentin during the German offensive. The photo of him was taken I believe in 1917 when The regiment was sent to Ireland. (he is on the left). Bill Dungey
