In the late summer of 1943 there came together elements of the British Army which were to form an infantry division the like of which had never been seen before. Men drawn from the Territorial Battalions of the Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and Cornwall Regiments; men drawn of the newly formed , and reformed battalions such as the Worcestershires and men in the Royal Artillery, the Middlesex Machine Gunners, the Royal Corps of Signals, the R.A.S.C., R.A.M.C., R.E.M.E., R.E., R.A.O.C., RECCE and many support units of armour which came under command from time to time, formed the fighting "Wyverns" which became the scourge of the enemy from Normandy to Germany during 1944 and 1945.
Now a new territorial Brigade carries on the tradition of the honoured "Wyvern" and, together with the 43rd(Wessex) Brigade, we old comrades of the great Division, decided, at the site of the 43rd memorial at Mere in Wiltshire on Sunday, July 16th, 1995 to form the 43rd Wessex Association.
The main purpose of the Association are to bridge the gap between the old and the new, to keep alive the traditions established by the 43rd and to ensure that our memorials are maintained and for ever revered.
