The French, 64,000-strong under the Marquis de Contades, confronted the Hanoverians, British and Prussians, 54,000- strong under Ferdinand of Brunswick. Ferdinand detached a force of 10,000 to threaten de Contades' rear, and then broke the first line of the French. The Allied cavalry failed to advance and the French were able to rally and carry out an orderly retreat. They lost 7,086 killed, wounded and prisoners, forty-three guns and seventeen standards. The Allies lost 2,762, half of them from the six English regiments. Lord George Sackville, the Allied cavalry commander, was cashiered from George II's army.

Soult's 20,000 French tried to prevent the 14,000-strong British army, after a long and hazardous winter retreat, from embarking at the Spanish port of Corunna. The French were held off and lost 2,000 men; the British lost 800 and their commander, Sir John Moore.
