Daniel Toon, 1826-1845
being researched by Mark Toon
MarkToon@shaw.ca
Daniel Toon joined the regiment at Nottingham
on the 30th day of June 1826, recieving the bounty of three pounds from his
majesty King George the 4th, Daniel was 17 when we joined up and was in the
regiment for 17yrs and was discharged on 26th April 1845 at the age of 34 he
was medically discharged as he had consumption (TB).
He died 2 years later in Derby leaving a widow
and 6 children. He was stationed in Canada for 11yrs Montreal,Quebec city, Toronto,
and London (Ontario) I know this from census records which show four of the
six children with place of birth in Canada. I also know he was stationed in
Ireland abt 1830 as he married a Irish girl (Mary Kennah) who became a nanny
to the officers children. All this I have a verbal record of as I have a tape
of my great Aunt who was 80 in 1970 telling me about sitting on her grandfathers
knee and him telling her all about his father ! Most of this I have verified
except I would dearly like to find out where the regiment was stationed in Ireland
(1830) plus how do I find regimental marriage and birth records.
I also need to know where the regiment was in
1842 as Daniel's son, my great grandfather, William Toon was born in Leeds?
1842 (census 1862) and I cannot find any civil record of it, my great aunt said
he was born in the barracks? somewhere
I have managed to obtain Daniels Toons enlistment
and discharge papers from W.O but they do not say where he was stationed except
11yrs in Canada.
So thats my interrest in the regiment any help
you can give me woud be greatly appreciated,as I am so far away it is hard to
do research. I live in High River Alberta Canada which is SW of Calgary in the
foot hills of the Rockies, Although I emmigrated from Nottingham in 78 I have
a interrest in british military history and genealogy (I,m back to 1780 derby)
