Roll of Honour of Officers

Abbreviations k. in a Killed in action
d. of w Died of wounds
killed Killed, other than in action.
died From natural causes, etc.
p Prisoner

Abbreviations of Regiments and Battalions, enclosed in brackets after names, denote Officers attached.
Each Officer counted once only.

The 1/5th Battalion comprises I5 killed, 28 wounded, and 2 missing, making a total of 45.

Mr. Henry Charles Dickens, O.B.E., and others, have kindly assisted in compiling and arranging, but it is regretted that no assurance of accuracy can accompany the following details.

Attention is especially invited to the note in the "Preface" of the volume published by His Majesty's Stationery Office under the title Officers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 :--

"Nothing whatever contained in these rolls is to be quoted or made use of in any representation which it may be desired to make on the subject of rank, decoration, nature or date of casualty, or anything consequent upon any casualty."

The mere record of a Roll of Honour reveals nothing of the greatness of the sacrifice. To do full justice to the heroism of these Officers would be impossible, and to make a selection therefrom would be
invidious. Nevertheless, it would be well for us all in scanning this roll, to remember the immortal lines of one of our soldier-poets, that-

" There's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England."
