Anyone who has watched the green-jacketed heroes
of the television drama ‘Sharpe’
in action may be able to identify with the ethos
and history that envelops the forerunners of
today’s Light Division. It is this spirit
of daring and forward thinking that has lifted
the Band of The Light Division into the unique
position it holds within the world of Army Music
today.
Formed in August 1994 from the Salamanca and
Corunna bands of the Light Infantry and the
Peninsula and Normandy bands of the Royal Green
Jackets, the band upholds traditions that can
be dated back as far as 1665. Their abandonment
of the cumbersome drum in favour of the silver
bugle enables them to perform breath-taking
displays, and stadiums and auditoriums around
the world have echoed to the sound of thunderous
applause as their rifle-green uniforms leave
a trail of dust in their wake.
As well as performing as a world-renowned marching
band and concert wind band the musicians also
perform in many varied combinations such as:
Woodwind and Brass Quintets
Fanfare Trumpet Teams
Barbershop Quartet
String Ensemble
Dixieland Jazz Band
Dance Band
The band provides support for many famous military
and civilian events from Garden Parties at Buckingham
Palace to the Royal tournament as well as making
regular television and radio appearances. They
are kept very busy being the only 49 piece Army
band outside London, and recent overseas tours
have included Jordan, Greece, Cyprus and much
of continental Europe.
