His Grandson Roger J. Halfhide has donated them to
this website, he writes:
I have recently discovered amongst my
Grandfathers possessions some photographs of the DCLI
in Hong Kong 1913 / 1914. The pictures are of very good
quality although most have not been named. My Grandfather
was Private Frederick Sidney Cole 9800. I have a Post
Card sent to him from The Red Cross whilst he was a
Prisoner of War at Friederichsfeld
in Germany. It is addressed to "Pte F.S.Cole 9800
Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, Coy 2 No. 487 E.K.I.
The 2nd Battalion DCLI arrived in Hong
Kong on 13th June 1913, it was considered a plum posting
and with only one infantry battalion stationed there
at any one time, few officers or soldiers had ever a
chance to see. There was plenty of sport albeit limited
to inter company events. On the 21st Sept. 1914 the
2nd Battalion embarked in the troopship HT Nile bound
for England, they landed at Devonport and moved straight
to Winchester to become part of 82nd Brigade - 27th
Division.
They moved to France on 19th Dec 1914.
